A new Australian puzzle designer

Yes, you read it right. It seems there are more and more puzzle designers coming from Australia and obviously we won't complain!

Let me introduce you Nick and his SD white puzzles made with 3D printers. Nick will launch them on kickstarter soon and so I thought that it would be a nice idea so that then you can decide whether it's for you or not a bit in advance.

 

Nick designed a series of several puzzles called Entity Containment Device or shorter as ECD. The first one is ECD-001.

 

At a first glance, the puzzle looks neat and with a pure/esthetic design. But don't get fooled, it does not mean that it has nothing in its body. And that appearance makes it wonder "where will I start?".

 

ECD-001 is a Sequential Discovery puzzle which means that you will have to find tools and use them to make progress in your puzzle journey.

But I was wondering where can I find and use them because from the outside, there are no holes, no tools, nothing. But trust me, it will be clearer later during your puzzling journey. The solving process is pretty smooth and should not frustrate you too much, just pay attention to all the details as they can give you some clues...just saying.

All things work as expected and no force is required. And honestly, the puzzle is sturdy enough, so you're unlikely going to break it. 

You know that you've solved the puzzle when you find the token.

The solving time is mentioned to be around 50 minutes based on an average solving time from several people. Personally it took me less than 30 minutes. But it really depends on everyone, so don't be biased by me.

 

To conclude: I really enjoyed the puzzle and look forward to playing with the others in the series that I am sure will be as good as this one!!

Should I advise it? Of course!

Non infinity cube

Non infinity cube is a clever mechanical puzzle that was invented over 40 years ago by Vladimir Krasnoukhov. Originally called “Emelya’s Stove,” the name draws from Russian folklore (though the cultural reference doesn’t easily translate), hence its English name: the Non-Infinity Cube.

There are several challenges (24) that consist of symmetrical shapes to make by folding the cubes in some specific ways. So you really get a lot of puzzling for your money.

I found it pretty pleasant to play with the puzzle (it has a fidgety aspect) and even if you cannot make the official required shapes, well I guess you can find some as well and create your own challenges!

 
Making the required shapes is not that easy (nor it's overly difficult), it took me many moves including false progress (aka going back to the initial state...) to achieve some. I still need to work on this puzzles to achieve all the official shapes.

I have a small concern as the puzzle is entirely made with 3D printers (even the hinges): no force at all should be applied to the cubes. If you cannot fold a cube, don't insist or you will break the puzzle. And for this, maybe it's better to avoid letting children play with the puzzle (or consider a certain age above which it's ok).

By the way, I need to figure out something: on each side of each dice we can see dots like on real dice. But the challenges are only about shapes. So either there ar emore challenges for which you need to have one dot on one dice close to two dots on another dice. Or it's just to help you for the solution (or give hints) if any solutions exist...

 

I really like this puzzle. Well I usually like when you have many challenges for one puzzle and I always like building games. So if you're like me, I am sure you will enjoy it.

Hysteresis key

From time to time, there is an original puzzle that is made again using 3D printers and it seems the case for many Oskar's puzzles. This time let me introduce you with Hysteresis Key puzzle.

 

The goal is, by moving back and forth the "drawer" to release it from its base. If you move too far the key, the puzzle will reset by itself.

 

The original puzzle (on the left) is pretty hard to solve because it's a blind solve and you cannot see the path at all, while on the right you can see it. However, you still need to anticipate how the pin will go depending on the obstacles.

The other (obvious) difference between the original and the 3D printed one is about the materials used that were plastic and metal originally, making is heavier.

 

In my opinion, it's a very clever design and luckily it was made it again so I can finally understand the internals!

Chess castle by Archimaze Puzzle

Marc, the founder of Archimaze Puzzle, is a new puzzle designer who did an amazing job for this first design, with the ambition of becoming part of the world's top designers.

Let me explain more in detail.

Here we are with a big puzzle box containing written riddles and hidden mechanisms. The puzzle itself is very big, way bigger than what I expected. But honestly it would not do justice to a king living in a small castle, right?

In addition to its generous size, this 3D-printed puzzle is very carefully designed and you will notice a lot of effort put into the details. All the aspects of a real castle are there.

As just mentioned, you will have some riddles. They are part of the experience and they are not that easy. I am not very good at riddles, but I am not against them as well especially when they play a role in the whole story like here. Yes, there is a story all along your puzzle journey! You will have to read a little bit (I promise) and from the start to the end, the story will make sense to you.

The story is focused on the game of chess: you're the player in the chess world and you need to reach your goal (I won't tell you what it is!). You don't need to know how to play chess to enjoy the puzzle, and that's the good point with it. Personally I like chess and I know how to play chess. Also, I have never seen a mechanical puzzle based on chess. So I can only have a good first feeling about the puzzle :)

What about the mechanical side?

The Chess Castle is a mechanical puzzle meaning that you will have to use some tools (so yes, it's a SD puzzle as well!) in some creative ways! Trust me, Marc has a devilish mind !! Usually a new designer starts slowly, but here it's not the case. For your greatest pleasure of course :)

No force, gravity or banging are needed, only gentle moves. (By the way, be gentle with any puzzle!)

I loved many moves and their consequences. I don't want to spoil it, but everything is spot on. When these things happen, you will enjoy them without a doubt.

 

What about the riddles?

They are fully integrated to the puzzling experience. I would say it's 50% riddles and 50% hidden mechanisms. But the riddles help to make progress on the mechanical parts. When I say "riddles", it means here that the chess pieces that you will encounter will speak to you, giving you clues and encrypted messages that will help you move forward during your journey.

You have to analyze their words very carefully. The hidden meanings will be useful too.

You could be tempted to bypass some elements like forcing the cryptex on the top which is taunting you from the beginning. Don't do that! You could be cast into the oblivion in the very depths of the castle dungeon! Plus you will miss some interesting stuff. So I would advise to keep on trying and also to take notes: you will discover a lot of elements and pieces and you may need to track what you've found so far. If you don't do that, you will be forced to do it anyway, so better to start at the beginning of your journey.

Some riddles were a bit too hard for me I must confess. But again, I am not used to that. So maybe it will be easier for you? No need for any specific knowledge by the way.

I would say that the riddles are somewhat around a difficulty of 8 to 9 over 10 and the mechanical aspect around 7 and 8 over 10. But at the end I would give a total difficulty of 8.5/10 I guess. 

The price can be considered as high, so now the key question: 

Is it worth the price?

Yes, Yes and Yes!

Why? First there are a lot of things to discover, many tools and other interesting stuff. Marc put a lot of effort on the story and the game design, and they make your puzzle journey full of surprises. On the detail and look of the puzzle, nothing is missing, nothing was neglected. Regarding the size: you will have a big beautiful puzzle to display in your puzzle cabinet.

Remember that you pay not only for a finished product but also for the joy and thinking behind it (no, I have not been paid to say that!). And I guess it's the same for all puzzles: there are a lot of hours and nights spent on designing a puzzle and avoiding flows. 

If you're into chess, mechanical puzzles, SD puzzles and riddles, no doubt: go for it. If you're a bit less into riddles or chess, honestly, you should give it a try. I am sure you will enjoy it a lot.

It's a limited edition puzzle: 100 puzzles crafted and no one will ever be made again in the future. Marc will move into other puzzle projects. So don't wait too much or you will regret it. Just saying....

Dancing shoes

Dancing Shoes is a puzzle designed by Goh Pit Khiam, who is famous for very clever packing puzzles that usually have a nice twist.

This one is no exception to that rule :)

May Goh puzzles have been made in wood by Tom Lensch, but not sure is this puzzle has ever been made by Tom, so I guess this 3D printed version that Puzzle Master is selling is the only copy of Dancing Shoes.

The goal is to put all the pieces flat in the tray without overlaping the pieces. Having saying that (and that no force is required!), it's up to you how to arrange the pieces! But you will soon realize that you need to think outside the box. Goh designed some time ago more or less a similar puzzle and even if Dancing Shoes does not have the same appearance , I thought that the solving process should be more or less the same....and guess what: I was right !! That does not mean I solved in within a minute. It still did not take me hours.

The solving process is smooth and very enjoyable. I am sure that it may take long long time for a non experienced puzzler as it requires a trick that may be natural for a seasoned puzzler!

Whether you like Goh's puzzles and/or packing puzzles and/or puzzles with a twist, you won't be disappointed at all.

Keebox packing

Keebox have created so far 3 sequencial discovery puzzle. They are all great if you wonder, but today we'll talk about their packing puzzle: keebox pack.

The material used is 3D printed parts like their previous puzzles and the goal is to pack all the pieces inside the tray.

For some reasons, it reminds me a bit of Yuu Asaka packing puzzles in the sense of that it's not like a regular packing and that there must be a trick somewhere. And also the shapes of the pieces are not super common.

 

I feel that the quality is superb and no force at all is needed for assembling the pieces to each other.

It took me a bit of time, but as surprisingly less than what I thought, I guess I was just lucky because usually it results with a fail from me with these kind of puzzles!!

For nice quality, the enjoyable challenge and the sweet price, I can only advise you to buy it!

Pocket Change puzzles

Pocket Change puzzle is a series of 4 puzzles (5 puzzles if you include the heart, though its name does not include "pocket") made out of 3D printers by Piker.

The puzzles are all really nicely made and can be taken for puzzling on holidays as they are pretty small.

No need to say that all the puzzles are different from each other in terms of solution.

I will try to put a difficulty for each of them out of 5. It's subjective for sure. 1 being the easiest and 5 the most difficult.

Pocket Change Red

This is a very tricky puzzles, easy to repeat, that has stumped many puzzlers (including me!). Actually I had ideas but I was a bit reluctuant to perform them due ot the nature of these puzzles. The solution proved me that I was right.

It does not require a lot of steps but these are addictive and you will, I am sure at 100%, perform them many times...It's satisfying :)

Difficulty: 4/5

Pocket Change Yellow

This is a famous kind of puzzles that everyone knows put in a pocket size. Usually I am not that good at these puzzles, but I found Pocket Change Yellow to be fu and not that difficult. And you get some parts revealed, no blind navigation here :)

The coin is the only thing of this puzzle that come out of the box. No small pices. So you can take is safely with you on a train or plane.

Difficulty: 2/5

Pocket Change Orange

Let's start with a fact: it's my less favourite puzzle among the whole series as you don't see or uderstand precisely what you're doing. Bits come off not knowing why...then you get the "how" to get it back question to your mind coming up!....

I managed to solve it but with luck I guess. Still a nice puzzle....for seasoned puzzlers !!

Difficulty: 5/5

 

 

Pocket Change Purple

It's the latest pocket change puzzle and probably my favourite puzzle in terms of look among the whole series. Hidden tricks will puzzle you a bit and you should quickly understand how it works. At the beginning I had assumptions that could have been true but ended up being false. I guess many would have had the same assumptions....only the ones who tried the puzzle can understand :)

I like the rattling of the marbles :)

Definitely recommended !!

Wedding Puzzle

It's not part of the pocket puzzle, but Piker sold it along with them so I guess I should add it as well.

I think the goal of the designer was to create a puzzle for a wedding, easy enough so that people with any puzzle experience can solve and enjoy the puzzle.

It's not a new kind of mechanism, but I still enjoy it though. And for sure you can bring to friends for them to try it. While being pretty easy, it's not trivial though. And it took me some time because either I did not fully applied the precise steps or I tried something completely different.

Bullet burr puzzles

We all know burr puzzles, you know the mind bogging puzzles...!!

What's the common point between burr and soma cube? 

Well, both have existed since long time ago and designers have always tried to make different shapes, keeping the same goal in mind but adding some new challenges.

These bullet puzzles exist in 2 variations: Design 1 and Design 3, both are 3D-printed (with great quality)

 

 

Now what about the challenges? Well usually these kind of puzzles are not that easy for several reasons: first you need to make the final shape in your mind. And then you need to assemble the pieces and this requires a bit of dexterity. Especially here when the pieces can slip out of your fingers easily. Rubber bands will help for sure! :)

It took a bit of time to assemble one puzzles and the other one is still unsolved...I will get back to it when I can. I don't like defeat.

Usually with burr puzzle, once the puzzle is completely assemble, the structure is strong enough that it usually does not fall apart. So the challenging parts are at the beginning when all the pieces can easily fall apart !!

For those of you who like challenging puzzles, these are definitely for you!

Also I like a lot the shape, they look stunning and will display well in your puzzle cabinets.

This puzzle has some wonderful mathematical properties

This is a pretty unusual puzzle, not because it's made out of 3D printers (which has become more and more usual these days) but because of the way it works (well the way it opens).

So a ball shape with a marble inside, probably composed of 3 (?) identical (?) pieces that you have to disassemble.

There are 2 methods to disassemble the puzzle:

-> the brute force: actually you won't use "brute force", but still this is not the intended solution

-> the intended solution which is very very nice.

 

I have solved it with the Solution many times and it is always super funny.

No, I am not a weirdo! And I am sure that my readers who have solved it know what I am talking about.

The solution is easily repeatable and will blow your mind again and again. You should really trust me.

Despite the seemingly simplicity of the puzzle, well there are some strong maths behind, that I am not going to share. I may have the explanations in PDF format somewhere in my computer though.

But don't worry, no need to understand the explanations to have fun with the puzzle. 

Did I tell you that it even got a prize during a puzzle design competition? and i tmy opinion it is well deserved :)

C1 puzzle

Creative Workshop is pretty productive in terms of puzzles released over the past few months. I have reviewed many (just browse in my older reviews).

Their recent puzzles have been pretty big, the new one C1 is smaller. That does not mean easier!

The goal remains the same: open the big by trying to make your path through the devilish traps. It's obivous that there are locking pins allinside the puzzle. The real question is: how to deal with them.

Actually there are 3 challenges: understand how to move the top, how to move the bottom, solve the puzzle.

I fugured out quickly how to solve thefirst 2 goals. The 3rd one puzzled me for some time. But I am still proud of having been able to solve it without any help and without taking hours and hours.

I still must admit I was lucky (luck is always welcome anyway!) and once opened I realized that the puzzle is more complex than what I expected: very well thought, clever, and not for the faint of art.

Of course, as usual the quality it top and the mechanism is very reliable.

I tend to think that C1 is more or less equal to the orb in term of difficulty. I would rate Newton as a bit more difficult.

The marks on the side of the puzzle: are they of any help? or just here for the beauty? you will need to figure out :-)

If you like the puzzles in the series and/or you want to be puzzled, go for it, you won't regret.

Some more 3D printed puzzles !!

Here are the latest 2 puzzles by Creative Workshop, a Canadian company specialized in 3D printed puzzles. I review several of their puzzles, have a look :)

So here comes the Arcturus, a spherical puzzle with many tiny bits inside. Not really a surprise from these puzzle makers!

The goal is to open to puzzle and yes, you have to open both halves....not yet a surprise. On Puzzle Master webshop, a guy wrote a comment stating he solve the puzzle in 2 minutes. This is not possible, even with luck. Basically I think I had luck when I managed to opened the puzzle because even if you can try to deduce some things through the small openings, you cannot see all the traps and locks. So yes basically I think a bit of luck is involved. Well, I must admit a more logical solution will be applied for the most seasoned of my viewers ! :)

I think this is a clever puzzle (and a big fidget toy if you cannot open it). No new mechanism but a clever way of using ball bearings. It may keep you busy for a while. Before closing the ball, just study carefully the locks, not only to reassemble in the correct way the puzzle, but also to manage to open it again later on.

The second puzzle is called Traffic Light

This is more a sequencial discovery puzzle as you will find tools to use. The puzzle is pretty big, well bigger than I imagined !

The goal is to take out the 3 lights and open the box. You can open the box only after taking out the lights.

There are pins and magnets. You know what you have to do when it's about pins and magnets? Well then you should manage to solve some steps. The 3 lights don't open the same way, and the difficulty is increasing. Don't loose your tiny bits you will get, they may be helpful somehow somewhere. 

This is a challenging puzzle and I see well how people will be puzzled with it. The use of the tools is clever, and this is why I like this puzzle.

This is the only SD puzzles among the other puzzles from Creative Workshop. So whether you like SD puzzles and/or their puzzles, don't hesitate and go for it ! :)

Labyrinth

 

A nice puzzle made by Jean-Claude Constantin. The goal is to free the ball bearing. Easy? At a first glance, yes. When looking more carefully...not that much. Because you need to take into account several parameters: the top plate rotates and there are several hidden paths.

The quality is awsome, so I don't have much negative things to say. Suitable for children and for seasoned puzzlers. If you're completely lost and want to start from the beginning, just unscrew the screw, open the puzzle, free the ball and play again!

Crazy crescents

This is not a puzzle but more a toy and the goal is to make different shapes. I like a lot the screwing process. It's fun and can be considered as a fidget toy. And it's colorful !!

Rubix's cube secret box

Well the correct name is: Oskar's treasure chest, but the idea is that you have a box in the shape of a rubix cube. And this is clearly a rubix'scube that you solved with the existing algorithms of the rubix's cube.

I need to tell you it's not a professional rubix's cube so you cannot perform the "corner cuttings".

Valentine puzzle

A nice plexi puzzle with several challenges created by Russian designer Vladimir Krasnoukhov.

Task 1: Using all five elements of the set, make different silhouettes as pictured in the instructions.  Elements can be flipped and turned, but they must not overlap.  You can make more than 100 different symmetrical polygons with different number of angles.  The hardest one to make seems to be a polygon with 13 angles.

Task 2: Using all five elements of the set, make two congruent shapes simultaneously (ie. equal in form and size).  There are 2 solutions.

Task 3: Prove that using this set of elements one can tile an infinite plane.

I think this is a fun puzzle because you can being entertained for several hours. You don't get only one puzzle, but many!

I think there is one missing challenge (easy): put all the pieces in the tray

Well known game: many traps, many path. You need dexterity, patience and nerves to solve it. Don't be in a hurry to move slowly the ball from start to end!

Nice little puzzles by Doug Engel

Doug Engel is a prolific puzzle designer. He has an etsy shop where he sells his designs made out of 3D printers. Note that he made one metal puzzle and this should be a limited edition, so grab one while you can :)

Atome 

The easiest in the series. It's looking great and display well. Not super difficult. A nice warm-up. Don't forget that usually disassembling a puzzle is easier than reassembling it. So keep track of what you do.... :)

 

Saturn puzzle

No need to explain the name I guess :)

The goal is to seperate the pieces. A nice fidget toy as well as a puzzle. Not super difficult but rewarding. In my opinion, this would make a nice level 1 or 2 hanayama puzzle. Hope the designer thought about asking Hanayama to produce it !

Now more challenging: Six Circles

Way easier to disassemble than reassemling as reassembling ca be pretty much confusing with all those circles. Note that the solution is displayed for this puzzle on the product page, so don't be tempted to look at it !

Finally: the Borromean Cage

Tricky as there are many moving parts. The goal is to free the 4 star constellation inside.

Many of these puzzles were presented at past IPP. Even if they did not get a prize, they are preatty unique in their respective type and for the  soft price tag, I can only recommend to have a go !

Very suitable for beginners as well as for seasoned puzzlers.

The most difficult 3D packing puzzles on earth !

The title means it, it's no joke, wait and see !!

These puzzles are designed by No Problem puzzle "company", basically a group of 2 people (sorry I don't remember the names and they are hard to write, sorry guys!). 

Their packing puzzles have rotations and many tricks and despite their simple look are extremely hard.

Turn Them In

The goal is to pack the pieces inside and close the box. The thing is that if you do it the way below, you won't be able to close the lid because of the corners forned by the cube.

Obviously you will need to make some space, enough so you can turn a piece inside the hole. Ok, sound obscure, but you will see what I mean when you play with the puzzle. I would say this is the easiest of the puzzles in this post!

Naaidoos

Only 3 pieces.... sounds easy?? Not way. Probably the most difficult one! You need to rotate the pieces inside using the finger holes and sliding the two parts of the box. Difficult and the tolerances are small and tight.

Quadrille

A challenging puzzle with several difficulties: the obstacle (the rod), but the holes created and top and bottom. You need a bit of dexterity to keep the pieces stable. 

Toogle Box

Challenging without being frustrating, toogle box is a nice puzzle. The obtacle is not my favourite one, but it does the job to annoy you :)

Push-Pull

A very difficult puzzle! You will need to use your brain and do something new that you've not tried with the other puzzles from the same series. Yes, something new!

To conclude: for sure you will have a lot of fun for your money. There are very innovative, very well designed and made. And for sure, they are not the usual packing puzzles you're used to. 

So you know what to do for some challenged! :)

369 SD puzzle box

 369 puzzle box is a 3D-printed puzzle designed by CreativeWorkshopCA.

I already review Eye of Horus, the Tiger and the Cryptex. But 369 puzzle box may be my favourite one.

It's a sequencial discovery with several tools you need to use to make some progress during your puzzling journey :)

You should discover some tools are the very beginning but you may be soon confused with how you should use them. That's not that obvious, but you need to experiment even if you think this is a stupid idea.

At some point I was blocked and I really wondered what to do. Basically the puzzle needed a bit of shaking (not necessary normally) because the official solution proved to me that I was right withmy ideas and that it should be opened. But again the puzzle does not need any force nor tapping. A slight shacking won't damage anything though and may be a bit useful.

It's not a big puzzle but still have many things inside its body and this is what I like. You don't need to have a big puzzle to have many things going on inside. And usually the biggest puzzles don't have (proportionnaly speaking) so many things inside.

I do recommend it at 200%. You will have a nice challenge with a satisfying solution for pretty cheap and for a top quality !!

Cryptex Cylinder Puzzle Box

For the 3rd review of a puzzle designed and produced by CreativeWorkshopCA, I am going to review the Cryptex Cylinder Puzzle box, also known as the Newton puzzle.

And this is clearly way more challenging than Horus and Tiger !! You're warned!

The puzzle is bigger and has 3 moving parts and again some ball bearings. Some writings surround the puzzle.

Just to be clear: it's not really a cryptex puzzle: you don't have to solve any riddles or anything like that. The name of the puzzle (Newton) can give you a hint (that I was only aware after reading the official solution....meaning: it's not so that useful to solve the puzzle).

 

 

By moving the different part of the puzzle you will see that there are some holes on the core of the puzzle and probably you will have to make the lin between these holes and the ball bearings...

Again, I had an idea on how to solve the puzzle, but it was more challenging to implement the idea than expected.

Be prepared to see some ball bearings disappear and then appear again somewhere else for a reason that you might not fully understand :)

The main difficulty with this puzzle is that you cannot see what you're doing (that would be ok with a small puzzle though) and there are many things involved. At some point a lid can be blocked, but you might not understand why.

I advise also to pull the lid and probabl you have solved the puzzle without noticing it.

At some point, I manage to pull the lid and I was like "finally solved!" but the lid did not fully come apart and so I did not have solve the puzzle :-(

It's after some time that I completely solve the puzzle!

Obviously I did not follow the steps as in the official solution, I guess the correct solving process is not super easy.

I like the puzzle, but maybe a bit too challenging (or frustrating) for me.

But again, I advise it!

About the screws: they are not part of the puzzle. Unscrewing them allow you to reset the puzzle easier. But of course, if you admit defeat then you can unscrew them and check the mechanism.

Eye of Horus - Cryptex Cylinder Puzzle Box

Eyes of Horus is the second puzzle box, along with Tiger, produced by CreativeWorkshopCA, with the same difficulty.

I don't know which of the 2 is more challenging...maybe this one (basically I don't set a timer to see if I am good at a puzzle or not, so....)

Both Tiger and Horus share some characteristics: very well made with 3D printers and things ratling inside.

I roughly had an idea how I could solve the puzzle and it turned out to be the right idea.

Horus has a second lid on the top of a first lid, it moves, but is it useful?....you will have to figure out!

When I played with the puzzle, sometimes the lid was stucked, sometimes it moved freely. Blocking the lid can help you doing some things, but (and this is not a spoiler!) if the lid cannot move then you cannot open the puzzle.

Contrary to Tiger, for horus you have a small hole on the oustide of the puzzle, from where you will see a ball bearing appearing and then disappearing. It is helpful !

For that reason, I think I prefer Horus than Tiger, despite both of them being super cool ! 

 

And again, for the quality, solving process and price, I can only recommend to buy them :)
